Auxili-ja! is celebrating its anniversary this year.
On October 26, 2026, we will be exactly 40 years young, and we plan to celebrate this on Sunday, October 18, 2026, with a Eucharistic celebration at the Werenfridus Church in Wervershoof. Afterwards, we'll enjoy a delicious "World of Taste" at Café Restaurant 't Fortuin.
How did it all begin?
On October 26, 1986 Sjaak de Boer celebrated his first Holy Mass. He was going to work in Brazil. Former mayor Meijer felt that Sjaak deserved not only moral but also financial support. So, after the Mass, he spoke to several people on the square in front of the church, and the "Brasili-ja Working Group" was born. The group was very creative in devising activities to support Sjaak. Because Sjaak was going to work in The Hague at the international English-speaking parish "Church of our Savior," we changed our name. In 2002, we became a foundation with ANBI status and are now known as Auxili-ja! We are inspired by the first six Sustainable Development Goals and by Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si', with our mission: Auxili-ja! supports small-scale projects worldwide that benefit local communities.
Our group consists of nine people, one of whom oversees everything from The Hague. Martijn once described what we do and why: "What I always secretly thought was confirmed last night: we are a unique, close-knit, and diverse group of people with passion and commitment who find it important to make a difference for the people around us in some way."
This year is our anniversary. If you're thinking of a gift, we have a good idea. You can become a "Friend of Auxili-ja!" for an annual donation of 20, 40, or 50 euros. For more information:
